U OF
OREGON MATH CLUB

by Zach Almquist

Here is a list of this year's officers:
President- Zack Almquist
Vice President- Aaron Henner
Secretary - Jaime Wren
Next years elections should take place this spring or early next fall so if you or anyone you know would like to get involved with the administrative arm of the math club, they should email me at [zalmquis@gladstone.uoregon.edu].
The math club looks forward to your future participation and support . . .

On January 13th the UO Math Club officially acquired ASUO sponsorship; starting next fall the math club will have 300 dollars to spend on teas, prizes for Hilbert Space newsletter puzzles, etc. This should help make the Friday teas more accessible and easier going on your check book. But more importantly it is chance for the undergraduates to become engaged with one another and learn what their peers are doing, a chance to begin the process of becoming aquatinted with the mathematics community at the UO and hopefully the mathematics community abroad. Hopefully many math majors and other students at University of Oregon will take advantage of this new resource and partake in the afternoon teas with professors.
We had our budget hearing, as I mentioned before on January thirteenth, in the EMU. As with any EMU event the first thing to do is wander around in search of the room name you have been given-- ours turned out to be a river room, which meant a minimal amount of searching (think three or four minutes of math nerds, maybe 5-6 of us, walking around). Once at the room we discovered to our chagrin that the ASUO was running behind by more than an hour. Thus we ended up sitting into the back cafeteria twiddling our thumbs. Although in reality most of us spent the time either bs-ing or working through various combinatorial problems.
So, we decided to watch the hearing before ours in a vague attempt to prepare ourselves for the entire fury of the ASUO budget minions. The OUTLAWS were the group before us, which unlike our group was well established with something close to 20 times our budget. We heard them bickering back and forth over whether they should get $4000+ for this convention or that convention, but in the end they got their budget. So after maybe 45 minutes it was our turn. The process was straightforward with only a couple of hitches from questions like "Do you allow woman in the math club?" and  "Are you going to use real tea cups or Dixie cups?" After we quickly refuted the claim that the math club was like golf and only for men with examples like Krista Heim and the female Jamie. We explained that our afternoon teas were more formal than Dixie cups would allow. So the budget was passed and here we are.
