"T
EA" WITH HAL

by Nathan Collins

On Friday, February 18, Hal Sadofsky was the faculty guest for the undergraduate tea. We went to Pegasus pizza, which had more to offer in the way of beer than tea, so we went with that, except for Josiah who not being 21 got to drink water out of a paper cup. We didn't order any pizza, but somebody brought some cookies from PC Market. David Jordan, Melissa Johnson, Zack Almquist, Josiah Thornton, Aaron Henner, Matt McKee, Tom Denton, and myself were the students in attendance.
There wasn't much discussion of math. Josiah and Hal each told a bad math joke, but that was about it. The conversation focussed mostly on Sci-Fi, comic books, and movies. Various people shared their version of the correct pronunciation of the word "noir", mostly in connection with how bad the movie Sky Captain and a World of Boredom sucked. It turned out that a lot of the undergrads, and Hal, were pretty excited about Sci-Fi. Since I haven't read much Sci-Fi or watched many Sci-Fi movies I bided my time by staring at the table. I had eaten a cookie when they arrived and some crumbs had fallen on the table. They weren't that interesting so I arranged them in a pile. Unfortunately, the crumbs weren't much more interesting in a pile.

On the way back to Hilbert Space there was a little discussion of operating systems. Everybody agreed that Mac OS got a lot better when they rebuilt it on top of Unix. The keyword there was Unix. If you're tired of blue screens, viruses, spyware, and expensive software with restrictive licenses sold by greedy vendors who treat you like a criminal it's time to start using GNU/Linux. It looks better, runs faster, and you might even learn a little something. Find your way over to http://distrowatch.com and pick a flavor. They have Baskin Robbins beat hands down. Here ends the article, along with this shameless Linux plug. It did make nice filler though didn't it?
