If you are like half the university and have taken or are taking the class Business 101 then you've probably received a few emails telling you that you should pick up the business minor. The business minor consists of 6 classes, BA 101, 215, and 315 through 318. Since I received these emails right about the time that I had decided to drop the physics half of my physics and math double major, it seemed like there weren't enough interesting classes for me to take, so I decided, why not pick up this business minor, sounds easy enough to do, and it will make it sound like I'm accomplishing more in college.
So one might wonder what are the benefits of having a business minor. The emails emphasized that if you had a business minor, then when applying for any job in the real world, your resume will be moved above everybody else's who does not have a business minor. Sounded pretty good to me. This term, my teacher Janet Mabon, talks to us as if we are all future managers of a company, so it seems to be aimed at managers from her standpoint. With a business minor, you can begin to understand how a business works, why companies have sales and advertising. You begin to understand how a company operates and records its day to day activities. My personal reason for taking the business minor is that my family owns a chain of grocery stores in the Portland area, and if I want, I may one day take that over. It never seemed like the job that I wanted growing up, but it may help me get where I wanted to go. My career goal in life is to graduate from college, make a lot of money, and then teach high school math and coach basketball. I haven't figured out how I am going to make a lot of money, but this business minor I think may be my connection along with the family grocery stores to make a lot of money.
