Next year University Housing and the Math Department are pooling their resources to offer students living in the residence halls a math-focused hall. Housing has always looked for new ways to connect to the academic aspect of its residences; and when current undergraduate math majors wrote a proposal to create a math community for the 2005-2006 school year last fall, Housing was very receptive. Since the proposal was written, University Housing and the Office of First Year Programs have been working out many of the details to ensure that such a community exists next year.
The math-focused hall will have two major components, a live-in student advisor and a weekly undergraduate math colloquium offered by the math department. The student advisor, Lauren Weiner, will live in the same building as the students to provide optimal peer advising and academic programs. The colloquium will aim to both stimulate undergraduate thinking in mathematics and to make math department more accessible in incoming math and science majors.
Soon, University Housing and the Office of First Year Programs will be advertising to incoming students as well as returning students planning on living in the residence halls. Advertisements will aim to interest students who plan on majoring in mathematics or science, including Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, and Math education. The only requirements for involved students will be to enroll in at least one 200+ level math course, attend the colloquium, and live in the residence halls. Interested students will be able to sign up for this new program starting March 1st via the Housing website.
