| Text: | Contemporary Precalculus: A Graphing Approach, Fourth Ed.,by Thomas W. Hungerford |
Note: There are two versions of the textbook available: the normal hardback version, and a custom paperback version. The custom version only contains chapters 1–5, but is cheaper. Math 112 requires the full version of the textbook, so if there is any possibility that you will take Math 112 (or the standard calculus sequence), you should buy the full, hardcover version, which you use in Math 112. However, if you are absolutely, positively sure you are only taking Math 111 (and you should check to make sure your major doesn’t require Math 112), the softcover version is appropriate (and lighter on your wallet). You may have noticed that a CD-ROM comes with some of the textbooks. I won’t be requiring it, although you might find it helpful. | |
| Prerequisites: | Math 095 or equivalent proficiency. |

Resources
Resources for Math 111—This page lists resources for students in Math 111. This class is one of the best supported at the University, in terms of tutoring help available. If you need help, I strongly encourage you to get help as early in the term as possible. DO NOT leave getting problems fixed until near finals. Fix problems early!

Some online versions of handouts are in the Portable Document File format and require a special reader. You probably already have a PDF viewer installed on your system. If not, some PDF viewers include GSView and Adobe Reader (previously known as Acrobat Reader). These programs are included on the Duckware CD.

- I announced some ways that you can get help in Math 111. A flier with all this information has been posted outside my office door, and has been posted on Blackboard. (Most materials I hand out will be posted on this web site, but from time to time, I will post them on Blackboard instead.) Most of the information is found on the resources page.
Thursday, 27 September:
I have posted the readiness quiz scores on Blackboard. Please log into Blackboard and use the “My grades” link on the left sidebar of our class’s Blackboard site to see your readiness quiz score.
The readiness quiz is for you to determine if you are ready to take Math 111 or if Math 095 would be better-suited for you. We want you to take the course which is most appropriate for you. Nobody is happy if you take Math 111 when you are ill-prepared, and you end up not passing.
A score of 7 or more is passing, and indicates you may be well-prepared to take Math 111.
A score of 6 is considered marginal. If you score a 6, you should consider taking Math 095 instead, especially if you were not placed into Math 111 by the placement test.
A score of 5 or fewer indicates you are not well-prepared for Math 111. Such a score indicates that you will have difficulty passing. If you are in this category, you are almost certainly better in Math 095.
Of course, you are all grown-ups, and so it is up to you to decide which course is best for you.
Please feel free to talk to me if you have any questions or concerns.
