Welcome to the Mathematics Graduate Program Home Page
at the University of Oregon!
The Department.
The Mathematics Department at the University of Oregon offers programs leading to a Master's degree or a PhD in a variety of areas of mathematics.
The American Mathematical Society has ranked the
department in the top group of U.S. research departments. The department
has distinguished research
groups in algebra, analysis, topology, geometry and probability.
The department has almost a perfect size: it is large
enough to provide the quality and breadth required for a major research
department, yet small enough so
that graduate students have close interactions with the faculty. There are 30 faculty members and
around 60 graduate students. You can find out more about the research
interests in the department from the Research page,
and our current
graduate students from the Students page.
Graduate Studies.
The primary goal of our graduate program is to
produce doctoral students who are outstanding
researchers and fine teachers. The majority of our graduate students are enrolled either
in the pre-PhD program (for students aiming for a PhD but who have not
yet passed the PhD qualifying examinations) or in the PhD program
itself. We also have a few students (one or two each year)
whose final goal is a Master's degree in mathematics, rather than a PhD,
and a few students enrolled in our
relatively new Master's program in math/education
for people who intend to go on to teach math in high school or
community college. You can find out more about the graduate programs
on offer from the Programs page, and the
graduate courses taught from the Courses page.
Graduate Teaching Fellowships.
Along with a program of stimulating courses and seminars considerable
effort goes into helping graduate students become good teachers.
Most graduate students are appointed as
Graduate Teaching Fellows and receive a full tuition waiver plus a salary for
the academic year.
Additional summer support is also available. The department has an outstanding record of placing its
doctoral students, due to its high level program of research and teaching.
For more about GTFs, see the Teaching page,
and for more about financial aspects of being a graduate student see
the Money page.
The University. The University of Oregon is located in the northwest
United States in the lovely
Willamette Valley, with easy access to the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade mountains. The beautiful
campus is home to about 20,000 students.
You can find some photos of the campus and the surrounding country
on the Eugene page.
Admission Procedures.
The application process is explained in detail on the
How to Apply page.
If after that you still have questions/problems, see the
Contacts page.
